Pugsley Upgrade I want to upgrade the Pugsley. I don't know if it is really an upgrade or not, but there are a couple of things I want to change. First I want to either rebuild or replace the rear wheel. I want to make it into a 9x1, sorry single speeders. That means I need a new rear hub or entire wheel. As well as a rear deraileur and shifter. If a new wheel is the way to go I want to try the new extruded Large Marge XC rim from Surly. Not sure on the hub yet. For the shifter I'm thinking of a Paul Components thumbie paired with a 9-speed shimano bar end shifter. For the rear deraileur I will use the 9-speed XTR off the 8000. I also thought about going with the White Industries Dos ENO freewheel, but it doesn't come in a big enough gear. I'd need at least a 22t. Any other ideas?

Change your bikes color, it doesn't like being blurple.

Why can't you just reuse the rim that you have? Just build it up with a new rear hub.

That sounds like it would turn out nicely with a thumb shifter. I like that idea for the winter bike.

You know, if you use the XTR parts on the Pugs, that means that your 8000 will need my XTR when I upgrade to the new style. ;)

Before giving up on the ENO, what size chainring are you running? After that why go with 9spd? Here's what you do, get a bunch of Surly cassette cogs. Their wide base is spaced so that when side by side they are spaced about what an 8spd would be. They are SS profile teeth so they won't shift super fast, but they won't not shift either. And you could run anything from 1-8 cogs depending on how they are spaced. Running only 3-4 big steel cogs would keep chain length down and let you keep an acceptable chainline. At least that's what I'm gonna do with my future grey Pug. To finish off the build find an old Campy derail.....just cuz.

I agree that I need to change the color. That's a whole other post.

Brian, I will probably end up reusing the rim. What hub do you think would work well in the winter? Before anyone says Rohloff, It's too expensive. As for the XTR. You know I like your sloppy seconds :)

Greg, I'm running a 32t Surly chainring. I also have a 34t and a 36t. I was thinking nine speed because I wanted to use the XTR off of the 8000. And I realy liked Fox's thumbie setup on his Ala Carte. Why only 1-8 gears? Chain line isn't a problem with the offset frame anyway. I would never be caught with Campy on any of my bikes. I say that just to spite Pw ;)

Keep the great suggestions coming.

Nexus 7 or 8 speed hub, roller brake or coaster, your choice. Fool proof, nothing hanging off the bike, and you can keep the flip flop for the front as an emergency.

Why 1-8? Ride the 8K through some snow and slush for a while and see how well it shifts....

Give your pugsley frame to Greg as a wedding gift, make sure you give it to him in front of a crowd of people and then make a big speech about how you expect him to keep the stock color as it is a gift. Then you can get a nice gray one, and he would have blurple. You probably wouldn't even want to switch any parts, you just have a disease of wanting to build a new bike up.

Hey Vino-

Check out pics #12-15 from this link:

Looks like Moots has officially entered the adventure racing market...

That link doesn't work, but here is what I think you were trying to link to. Very cool stuff. Who's going to be the first to get one?

profile has a downhill hun with room for 3-4 cogs.... Don't know about the cold...

Simmions just go fixed then no drive train worries ;)

I am thinking if I can make it happen i'll be rocking a redline 29er with delgoto disk rims they are 30mm with exi wolfs... low prussre 20-25 lbs...

Fixed prob just canti or vee's for brakes... rack for the -40 drgree mt smith bag.... Did you use poggies last year? Footwear..

I dont know if I can do somthing like the AH100 i've ridin in very cold for Colorado but -28 is much diffrent then -60 and still having 80 miles to go...

Hey Cellerat - That Redline 29er would be a great bike for the AH135. As long as the snow stays firm.

Fixed just doesn't appeal to me, but I admire those of you who can pull it off.

I did use pogies last year. They worked great. As for footwear I used the Lake winter boots with some cross country ski boot covers. They were pretty cold without heat packs. I'm thinking of using a light pair of winter boots with power grips this year.

It only got down to -20 last year. You'll be fine :) Let me know if you need anything.

Greg - I still don't understand your 1-8 option. You'll have to explain it this weekend. Besides I plan on riding on snowmobile trails, so riding throught the snow "shouldn't" affect the shifting. If it does I always have the single speed option with the front wheel. I just want to have the ability to fly down the trail when the conditions are right instead of spinning away on one gear.

pw - Nexus sounds interesting.

Nexus well freeze....

Gonna see if I can make this happen Dave....
